How many 5-star reviews do I need? The formula

Your star rating is a simple average: the sum of all stars divided by the number of reviews. Every new 5-star review adds 5 to the total and 1 to the count, pulling your average a little closer to 5. To find the smallest number of 5-star reviews that lifts you to your target, use:

Formula
x = N × (T − R) ÷ (5 − T)
// round x up to the next whole review
x
5-star reviews you need
N
Your current number of reviews
R
Your current average rating
T
Your target rating
Example: a business with a 4.2 rating from 120 reviews wants to reach 4.5. 120 × (4.5 − 4.2) ÷ (5 − 4.5) = 120 × 0.3 ÷ 0.5 = 72 five-star reviews, for a new total of 192 reviews.

The formula assumes every new review is 5 stars. In practice some will be 4 stars or lower, which is why the calculator also shows realistic scenarios with mixed ratings.

Why every 0.1 star gets harder

The closer your rating gets to 5.0, the less each new 5-star review can move it. Here is what it takes for a business starting at 4.2 stars with 100 reviews:

5-star reviews needed starting from a 4.2 rating with 100 reviews
Target rating5-star reviews neededNew total
4.315115
4.560160
4.7167267
4.8300400
4.9700800

The same math works in reverse. At a high rating, a handful of 1-star reviews can undo weeks of work. That is why consistent review collection beats one-off campaigns: a steady flow of genuine reviews keeps your rating stable when a bad one lands.

How to get more 5-star reviews the right way

Knowing the number is step one. Here is how to close the gap without breaking Google's review policies.

  • Ask at the right moment

Right after a delivery, a solved issue or a repeat purchase, when the experience is fresh and positive.

  • Make it one tap

Share your direct review link or a QR code in receipts, follow-up emails, order confirmations and at checkout.

  • Reply to every review

Thoughtful replies, especially to negative reviews, show future customers how you handle problems.

  • Build trust before the purchase

Customers who trust you buy with confidence, have fewer bad surprises and are far more willing to leave a review.

  • Don't ask only happy customers

Selectively asking for positive reviews, known as review gating, goes against Google's policies.

  • Don't pay or reward for reviews

Discounts, gifts or contests in exchange for reviews break the rules and put your reviews and your profile at risk.

Frequently asked questions

How many 5-star reviews do I need to raise my rating?
Multiply your total reviews by the gap between your target and current rating, then divide by the gap between 5 and your target: N × (T − R) ÷ (5 − T). Round up to the next whole review. For example, going from 4.2 to 4.5 with 120 reviews takes 72 five-star reviews.
Does Google round my star rating?
Google shows your average rounded to one decimal, while the underlying average is more precise. A true average of 4.45 usually displays as 4.5, so customers may see your target slightly before the exact calculation is met.
Can I reach a perfect 5.0 rating?
An exact 5.0 average requires every review to be 5 stars. If you already have lower ratings, your average can get very close to 5.0 but never land exactly on it. A displayed 5.0 needs a true average of about 4.95.
Can I remove negative reviews to raise my rating?
You can only report reviews that break Google's content policies, such as spam or off-topic reviews. Genuine negative reviews stay. The reliable way to raise your rating is to collect more genuine reviews from real customers.
Is it allowed to ask customers for Google reviews?
Yes. Google allows businesses to ask customers for reviews, but not to offer incentives in exchange or to ask only happy customers. Ask every customer, consistently, right after a good experience.
How long will it take to reach my target rating?
It depends on how many new reviews you get each month. Enter your monthly review volume in the calculator to see an estimated timeline for each scenario.
Does this calculator work for platforms other than Google?
Yes. The math works for any platform that shows a simple average on a 1 to 5 star scale. Some platforms weight reviews by recency or other factors, so treat the result as a close estimate there.
