See what it catches

Two five-star reviews for the same water bottle. One was written by a customer. The other was written to sell.

What is a fake review?

A fake review misrepresents a person’s genuine experience or relationship with a product or business. Incentives and coordinated activity can add context, but they are not proof by themselves.

Review patterns can still provide useful context: praise without detail, bursts of similar wording, or a rating mix that deserves a closer look. Those are signals to investigate, not conclusions about an author.

How to spot a fake review

Fake reviews are written to persuade, not to inform. These six patterns give them away most often.

Praise with no proof

Big adjectives, zero detail. No size, no delivery time, nothing about what it was actually like to use.

Reviews that arrive in waves

A burst of similar ratings or wording can be useful context when checked against the full review history.

Reviewer context

Limited visible history can reduce confidence, but it does not establish that a review is false.

Copy-paste phrasing

The same sentences, or the same structure, repeated across different reviewers.

A rating curve worth checking

A very concentrated rating mix can merit a closer look alongside the underlying reviews.

Sales talk

“Buy it now”, discount codes, links. Customers describe. Marketers sell.

Questions, answered

Is the Fake Review Detector free?

Yes. It is free to use and you do not need an account. Your pasted review is sent to Welo for analysis and the result is shown on the same page.

How does it decide if a review is fake?

It checks wording, detail, tone and other review patterns, then shows the signals behind the result. Treat the result as a risk indicator for further review, not proof about a person or business.

Which review sites can I check?

You can paste reviews from publicly readable sites such as Trustpilot, Amazon, Google, Yelp, Tripadvisor, Etsy, Booking.com or an online store. The detector analyzes the text you provide.

How accurate is the score?

The result is an analysis signal, not a verdict or a calibrated probability. Read the highlighted evidence, limitations and sources, then use your own judgement.

Are fake reviews illegal?

In many markets, yes. In the US, the FTC rule on fake reviews and testimonials, in force since October 2024, allows fines for businesses that buy, sell or publish them. In the EU, consumer law bans fake and commissioned reviews and requires businesses to say if and how they verify their reviews.

I run a business. How do I prove my reviews are real?

Get verified. Welo checks your business and your reviews, then gives you a public Welo Page and a badge your visitors can click to see the proof before they buy.
